Int. Zoo Yearb. 23: 95-100. ISSN 0074-9664
Abstract:
A reintroduction program was begun in 1972 to prevent extinction of the European Eagle Owl (Bubo b. bubo) in the Federal Republic of Germany. The original stock of 90 owls was obtained from existing captive stock donated by hunters, zoos, wildlife reserves and private owners. By 1982, the stock had increased to 250 owls including 50 reliable nesting pairs. Captive populations have increased by about 80 young per year. As of 1979, over 550 owls had been released, and the number of successful breeding pairs in the wild had increased. Between 1973 and 1982, there were 112 successful clutches and 304 young fledged in the two main release areas.
